In 2009 The Pink Spiders announced they were going on hiatus and people wept. On June 3, 2010, the band posted that all of the original(!) members had been playing together over the last few weeks and people rejoiced. Now, we are excited to announce that The Pink Spiders will be performing this Sunday, 6/20 — their first public show in over a year & in over 2 years with the original members. There is a first for everything, so come down, check out show, and support.
Not familiar with them? Here’s something to wet your musical palette:
Do you consider the pop art effect on your mac’s photobooth as one of the greatest contributions to the world of contemporary art? Are you constantly tagging stupid ass pictures of inanimate objects as your friends on Facebook? Well now we actually have something constructive for you to do with your “talents.”
CONTEST: Use the following Ashes Divide lyric and interpret it through photography:
“You don’t have to be shaken and confused and
hanging onto anything you can find.” [song: The Prey]
For example, the lyric “But you brandish the weapon of passive aggression” could be a picture of you leaving a flaming bag of dog shit on your cheating boyfriends doorstep.
RULES: Post the picture to your Facebook page and tag both The Viper Room and Ashes Divide in the post. Don’t be shy on letting us know what ‘you mean’ with a one line description. The person that impresses us the most with their creativity wins.
PRIZE: The contest is running from 6/18 to 6/22. The winner gets a pair of tickets, a VIP booth & happy hour drink prices all night for the 6/23 final Ashes Divide show. Not to mention peace of mind & a sweet facebook pic…What else could you possibly want? Don’t you dare say a unicorn.
June 8 is not just the anniversary of losing your dignity, it’s also the second installment of It’s Free Fckers. Free entry + Drink Specials. Forget ripping your pants at prom and being forced to wear the school mascot for the rest of the night. We have The Shakers [Record Release], Hillbilly Herald, Still Standing, Automatique, and New Liberty to make new, free fcking memories. Go get ‘em Tiger…I mean err, nevermind.
Insider Tip: For tonight only, park behind Viper Room for $7 parking!
What sort of soulless bastard doesn’t love a good rhyme? We not only appreciate the delicate craft, but will only write each other notes with lines in pairs. As part of our constant effort to bring class and decorum to the world, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to the person with the best fcking two line rhyme about ASHES dIVIDE. The person with the best rhyme not only wins a pair of tickets but a VIP booth as well.
Just place your little ditty in the comments of this blog post by 12pm Wednesday 6/9 for a chance to win.
A Perfect Circle might be on hiatus, but seriously, stop crying. We have good news — Billy Howerdel (APC mastermind) is keeping busy with his band, ASHES dIVIDE. So busy, in fact, they’ll be occupying our stage for four unruly nights of indefinable rock music. You read correctly… four nights – Wednesdays in June (6/2, 6/9, 6/16, 6/23)
ASHES dIVIDE is Billy Howerdel [vocals/guitar], Jeff Friedl [drums], Matt McJunkins [bass], Johnny Radtke [guitar] and they will be fulfilling all the sonic needs you’re not getting from Pitchfork. Consider it the exact remedy for your inevitable mid-week breakdown.
We’ll be interviewing Billy this week — Want to ask him a question? Comment on this post with your question and he’ll answer the best two submissions!
Just in case you’ve been living underneath some sort of mute rock and haven’t heard their tunes, here’s something to get you started:
Aren’t love and the apocalypse synonymous with one another? Whatever your twisted perception of relationships may be, your taste in music shouldn’t be affected (unless you’re an emofck.) Ok, moving on… One of our favorite local bands, 8MM, is having a CD release show for Love and the Apocalypse on Friday, June 4th – guaranteed rockin’ time.
The band: Sean & Juliette Beaven [husband & wife] + Jon Nicolson. Sean’s a well-known producer [NIN, Marilyn Manson, No Doubt, Kill Hannah] and Juliette’s just undeniably exquisite – this duo is what society calls a ‘powerhouse couple.’ It’s not cliché, its fact. Don’t think too hard, but you’ve heard 8MM before: One Tree Hill, Nip/Tuck, Jennifer Aniston’s least favorite movie “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and the list continues….
If that’s not enough to drag your ass out that night, check-in on Foursquare before you enter to reap the benefits, complete with $7 entry and a free signed poster. Their new album drops on 6/1 or preview it on Suicide Girls Radio between ten and midnight on 5/30. Don’t have Foursquare? Get your tickets:
Do you remember that bullshit your mom used to tell you, how the best things in life were free? We can’t give you a gold plated toilet, but the Viper Room has graciously made every Tuesday in June “It’s Free Fckrs.” No cover, just sick bands for your cheap ass self.
ATTN ROONEY FANS – Did you know Taylor Locke has his own solo project? And it gets better, Charlotte from The Like and Chris & Mikey from Everybody Else are also in the band and they are playing at The Viper Room on April 20th.
With influences like Beatles, Badfinger, Elvis Costello and Zeppelin paired with killer musicianship, this band will definitely have the stage rocking. Taylor Locke & The Rough’s new album, Grain & Grapes, was released earlier this year and is receiving killer reviews. The new Rooney album is being released in June, so this show will surely be packed. Grab your tickets here, and a free tune while you’re at it.
4 squared equals 16. So naturally April 16th (4/16) has been digitally declared Foursquare Day and cities all over the world will be holding Foursquare Day parties. There are plenty of people in Los Angeles using the mobile application, so why not have a party in Lalaland. [Click HERE if you don’t know about Foursquare]
Since we happen to use and love Foursquare, we’ve stepped up to the plate and decided to co-host a Foursquare Day party with our Santa Monica pals, 14 Below. We’re going for the Super Swarm badge (f*ck yeah) which, if achieved, is going to be awesome.
So here’s the game plan. Come to Viper 7:30-9:30 and enjoy free entry, a performance by rockers Attika and $5 drinks and $4 PBRs + PBR swag courtesy of @PBR_LA. Then head over to the newly re-opened 14 Below for a set by Blue Embrace and enjoy $3 drinks and $4 Bud Light Tall Boys from 10pm-2am.
If you want to tweet about the event, make sure to use the city & official hashtags: #4sqday#LA
What do a battle emcee / spoken-word poet and classically trained pianist / ska show attendee have in common? Blue Scholars.
While Geo & Sabzi may come from different approaches to the musical form; the last 8 years have proven their collision has found a unique balance. These lyricists “have emerged out of the erupting Northwest hip-hop scene with soulful beats, poetic yet political rhymes and a reputation for dynamic live performances.” A blending of personal and political world views with a mixture of party; this duo is armed with a purpose beyond creating music for music’s sake. Using their own experiences and intellect, they create music that serves the people.
Friday, April 16 with Bambu. Tickets are $12 in adv – purchase here and check out tune HI-808 below.
